People
Working with good young researchers is the part of the job I enjoy most, and the learning goes both ways more often than the word "supervision" suggests. The people I work with come from economics, sociology, computer science and statistics, and the projects usually need something from more than one of those. What matters more than background is a willingness to sit with a problem long enough to find out what is actually being asked. I have supervised ten PhD students, and several have gone on to work outside academia, which I think of as a good outcome rather than a loss.

Where People Have Gone
People leave in roughly two directions. Some continue in research, at Basel, ETH Zurich, the IT University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen Business School and here at SODAS. Others go into Danish policy institutions, the Economic Council of the Labour Movement, the Confederation of Danish Employers, ATP. That second group is not a departure from the work so much as a continuation of it by other means, since the questions we work on are the ones those institutions have to answer in practice.
The research assistants are worth noting separately. Most have gone on to PhD programs, which is close to the point of the role.
